If you enjoy a morally grey villain that stays that way, a female character who only gets stronger, and a story filled with humor and romance, then The Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating (and Other War Crimes) by Tiffany Hunt is what you need.

Dark Lord Kazimir Blackrose has obtained a powerful artifact that requires a bond with someone of heroic bloodline to activate. The only way he’s going to accomplish that is by kidnapping and marrying one, because no one of that lineage would willingly marry the Dark Lord.

Enter Lady Arabella, a smart and cunning woman who is tired of being treated like property by her father and has spent far too many days locked away in a tower. She has spurned the suitors her father has pushed upon her, earning a reputation as a troublesome woman. Being kidnapped seems like just another suitor she’ll be able to resist. But the deal she forges with the Dark Lord to willingly marry him helps her escape her father’s control on her own terms while gaining autonomy and strengthening her magic in the process.

The real trouble begins when the Dark Lord realizes that more than a marriage ceremony is required to activate the artifact, and he is forced to actually woo his wife. Each attempt goes hilariously wrong, yet somehow their bond deepens against both of their better judgment. As their relationship grows, they must face outside forces determined to tear them apart.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The dark humor is sharp, the romance satisfying, and the level of spice perfectly balanced with the plot. I especially love when a heroine is strong, not weak or confused and waiting to be rescued, and this story absolutely delivers. The antihero remains deliciously morally grey while still being someone you can’t help but root for. The magic system, fantasy worldbuilding, and side characters are all equally well done.

Overall, this is a fun, witty fantasy romance that embraces its tropes while turning them on their head. If you’re looking for banter, tension, a capable heroine, and a villain who doesn’t suddenly turn into a saint, this book deserves a spot on your TBR.

Many thanks to the author, Tiffany Hunt, the publisher, Scarlett Press, and Net Galley for letting me read an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
