We’ll Prescribe You Another Cat by Syou Ishida is the second book in a unique and heartwarming series. This edition is a sweet set of four stories that intertwine with each other, centered around the Nakagyõ Kokoro Clinic for the Soul, an unusual clinic that provides healing and wisdom through the placement of cats.

The patients find the clinic only when it is most needed. It is run by the mysterious doctor Nikké and his irascible nurse, Chitose, whose treatment plan for every patient involves prescribing them a cat—sometimes for a week, sometimes for a lifetime. Through the proper application of cats, each character learns how to deal with their issues, pain, and shortcomings. But as we move through each story, we see how they start to blend.

The stories start off as lighthearted, but as you read, you are pulled into the true emotions of each character and find real depth. Each story peels back layers to reveal more about the characters’ struggles and growth. There’s a gentle but powerful emotional thread that runs through the book, gradually drawing you in.

While the writing can feel somewhat choppy in some instances (possibly due to translation issues), it is easy to follow once you get used to the flow. The mysterious quality behind the existence of the clinic adds a layer of intrigue that I enjoyed. And the ending? Well, make sure you have tissues available.

If you’re a cat lover, enjoy emotional character-driven stories, or just need a cozy, healing read with a touch of whimsy, this book might be exactly what the doctor ordered.
